A 6-Step Checklist for Promoting New Blog Posts


You’ve researched, brainstormed, strategized, analyzed, written (and rewritten) your newest piece of content. One more round of edits and your latest blog post is good to go – right? Not exactly. Developing dynamite content isn’t enough to gain readership; it can take time to build up your subscriber list, so don’t throw in the towel when it’s time to hit publish! Maximize your marketing reach with these proactive strategies for promoting new blog posts.

SEO/Website Traffic

  • Serve content with search terms. Don’t publish your content without a dash of well-placed keywords – a little research can satisfy Google’s algorithms and help boost your search ranking. SEO isn’t a perfect science and learning what works often comes from trial and error. Scan your content and identify the main topics. Try to put yourself in your readers’ shoes – what words would you use to search for information related to your topic? Plug those terms into the Google AdWords Keyword Planner and see which ones rank the highest, then sprinkle a couple into your next piece of content.
  • Beef up SEO hotspots. Where you place keywords is just as important as the terms you choose. Review content and try to beef up your post title, meta description, and tags with those popular terms/phrases.

  • Don’t sidestep syndication. Your blog’s RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a super simple way to “feed” your content to your social media profiles and pages. Once they’re connected, your new posts will also be published on those sites, killing two birds with one stone. NOTE: Setting up the connections should be a one-time deal.

Follow the directions below to connect your blog’s RSS feed to your LinkedIn personal profile and Facebook business page.

    • LinkedIn Personal Profiles: Find “Blog Link” or “WordPress” in the applications section on your profile page and schedule it to automatically publish your content to your LinkedIn profile.
    • Facebook Business Page: Search for the “Social RSS” application in the applications section and choose the option that automatically publishes your content to Facebook.
    • Other Social Media Sites: Several other social networking sites give you the option to hook up to your blog’s RSS feed. Connect them and you can skip the step of manually adding them manually when you publish new content.

  • Be a status update allstar. You know that time you saved by hooking up your blog’s RSS to your favorite social sites? Use it to craft customized status updates for the sites you’re posting on. Yes, it’s a little more work, but readers are more likely to engage with your content if you adapt your approach to each site’s audience and etiquette. Think attention-grabbing headlines, “teasers,” or questions. Share them in relevant forums like LinkedIn groups, LinkedIn Answers, and Facebook groups

  • Go shorty (with blog post URLs.) This tactic used to be used exclusively for Twitter, but with the addition of analytics (click-through tracking) on many of the URL shortening services, posting a shortened URL on any of your social sites is a smart strategy. Check your URL shortener account for click stats, geographic and referring site data after your link has been up a while.
